| Match-fixing: PACE calls for mechanisms to combat a ‘problem posing a threat to public order’ |

[25/04/2012] Expressing its concern at the scale of manipulation of sports results, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) today called for the adoption of mechanisms to limit the risk of match-fixing, illegal betting and other forms of corruption. This problem and the illicit profits from sports betting are "jeopardising public order and the rule of law". (more..) |

| PACE calls on member states to ensure freedom of expression and information on the internet and online media |

[25/04/2012] In a resolution adopted today, PACE asked member states to "ensure respect for freedom of expression and information on the internet and online media by public as well as private entities". The Assembly considers that member states should also encourage intermediaries of media based on new information and communication technologies "to set up self-regulatory codes of conduct for the respect of their users' right to freedom of expression and information". [25/04/2012] Speaking on the tenth anniversary of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s membership of the Council of Europe, the foreign Minister Zlatko Lagumdžija of Bosnia-Herzegovina pledged that the struggle for full compliance with international human rights and democratic standards would continue. Outstanding issues still remained, but a positive spirit prevailed and there was a strong political will of all political parties to implement change. (more..) |

| PACE finds a ‘catalogue of failures’ that led to deaths of 63 people fleeing Libyan conflict by sea |

[24/04/2012] A failure to react to distress calls and a “vacuum of responsibility” for search and rescue are among a “catalogue of failures” which led to the deaths of 63 people fleeing the conflict in Libya by sea during a tragic 15-day voyage in March 2011, according to PACE. Backing a report by Tineke Strik (Netherlands, SOC), the Assembly said in a resolution that search and rescue authorities, NATO, the flag states of naval vessels in the area, the Libyan authorities and reckless smugglers were among those who shared responsibility. [24/04/2012] Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), today expressed his deep concern at the decline in Yulia Tymoshenko’s health and her decision to carry out a hunger strike in response to the violence and abuse she says she is suffering. “Having received information indicating that Mrs Tymoshenko’s state of health is worsening, I have met in Strasbourg with Ukraine’s Ambassador to the Council of Europe and members of the Ukrainian delegation to our Assembly..." [25/04/2012] Strasbourg, 25.04.2012 – PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon, the Chairperson of the European Museum Forum (EMF) Goranka Horjan, and Strasbourg City Councillor Nicolas Matt, have awarded yesterday evening the 2012 Museum Prize to the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum (Cologne), represented by the museum director, Prof. Dr. Klaus Schneider. The ceremony was held in the Palais des Rohan in Strasbourg. |
