Strasbourg, 17.05.2010 - At a press conference held today in the Parliament’s building of Montenegro, together with the President of Parliament Ranko Krivokapić, PACE President Mevlüt Cavusoglu explained that, during its April session, PACE had made a very positive evaluation of the progress Montenegro had achieved since its accession to the Council of Europe in 2007.
He stressed that further progress was needed to strengthen the democratic institutions and that it was particularly important to:
- adopt the new law on the election to the Parliament
- strengthen the position and controlling functions of the Parliament
- strengthen the structures and administration of the Parliament
- intensify the fight against corruption.
The PACE President finally expressed hope that his discussion during his visit to Montenegro, in the Parliament, with the President and the Prime Minister, will help to achieve these objectives so that the next monitoring report could be the last.
