Adopting a resolution on the honouring of obligations and commitments by Georgia, the Assembly welcomed “the significant efforts” made by the authorities in honouring their remaining obligations and the “considerable progress” achieved since the last monitoring report adopted in 2008, but decided to continue its monitoring procedure “pending further progress” on key issues. The Assembly members stressed that unemployment, poverty and low quality or absence of basic services particularly affected rural women, as did stereotyped roles and subordinate status, the outcome of traditional attitudes. All European states should share collectively the responsibility for dealing with the arrival of large numbers of irregular migrants, refugees and asylum seekers on Europe’s southern shores following events in North Africa, according to PACE. (More)
The Assembly decided to award its 2011 Human Rights Prize to the Russian NGO “Committee against Torture” (Komitet Protiv Pytok), in recognition of the organisation’s key role in assisting victims of serious human rights abuses. This is the second time the 10,000-euro biennial Prize, which honours “outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights in Europe”, has been awarded. (More)

Following a debate which brought together leading religious figures from across Europe, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has called for “a new culture of living together” based on the assertion of everyone’s equal dignity and adherence to the Council of Europe’s basic principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
61 years after Turkey ratified the statute of the Council of Europe, the Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his address to the Assembly, paid tribute to the organisation’s work against all forms of discrimination and in pursuit of respect for human dignity.
