Request for Partner for Democracy status submitted by the PNC
Mahmoud Abbas to address the Assembly

An address by the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, on Thursday 6 October 2011 will be one of the highlights of the autumn session of the Parliamentary Assembly, which will be taking place in Strasbourg from 3 to 7 October.

On Tuesday 4 October the Assembly will consider the request for Partner for Democracy status submitted by the Palestinian National Council, whose President, Salim Za'noun, will address the Assembly the same day. A report by Jean-Charles Gardetto (Monaco, EPP/CD) on co-operation between the Council of Europe and the emerging democracies in the Arab world, which calls on them to intensify and broaden their co-operation, will be debated on Wednesday 5 October. (More)

Prior to elections to Tunisia's National Constituent Assembly on 23 October 2011
Tunisia: statement by the PACE pre-electoral delegation

A delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) made a pre-electoral visit to Tunis to evaluate the electoral campaign prior to elections to Tunisia's National Constituent Assembly on 23 October 2011. The pre-electoral delegation noted with satisfaction that the Tunisian authorities have swiftly devised a legal framework for organising pluralist elections and, in this respect, it encouraged them to step up cooperation with the Council of Europe's Venice Commission. (More)

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly, the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe made the following statement : 'On this day of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks we first and foremost pay tribute to the victims and their families. This tragic date of mourning should serve as a reminder that terrorism has no ideology, no nationality and no religion...' (More)


Improving the democratic decision-making processes
Albania: all political parties should now focus on adopting the reforms the country needs 

“We welcome the return of the opposition to the parliament. It is now very important that all political parties constructively work in the legislative process and adopt the reforms that are needed for Albania, including for it to start the accession negotiations with the EU”, the co-rapporteurs of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly’s (PACE) Monitoring Committee for Albania say in an information note. (More)

Hünfeld receives 2011 Europe Prize during
ceremony


The German town of Hünfeld (Hesse) received the 2011 Europe Prize at a ceremony on Saturday 27 August which brought together a large public and local personalities.
The 2011 Europe Prize has been awarded jointly to the town of Hünfeld and its French twin-town, Landerneau. The presentation ceremony in Landerneau will take place on 15 October 2011. (More)
