Strasbourg, 20.10.2009 – Several members of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) will attend the Forum for the Future of Democracy in Kyiv, which starts tomorrow and continues until 23 October. This year's theme is "Electoral systems: strengthening democracy in the 21st century".
The Forum is organised by the Council of Europe, in conjunction with the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and will be opened by the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, and the Council of Europe's Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland.
Göran Lindblad (Sweden, EPP/CD) will address participants at the opening ceremony as Vice-President of the PACE. Other Assembly members taking part in the various workshops and round tables include Mevlüt Çavusoglu (Turkey, EDG), Hendrik Daems (Belgium, ALDE), Lydie Err (Luxembourg, SOC), Andreas Gross (Switzerland, SOC), Michael Hancock (United Kingdom, ALDE) and David Wilshire (United Kingdom, EDG). The President of the Assembly, Lluís Maria de Puig, will address the closing session.
During the Forum, the President of the PACE will hold meetings in Kiev on 22 October with the President of Ukraine, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament), the Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, and representatives of the various political parties represented in parliament.
