Appointing a European ombudsperson to ensure that the rights of young people are respected and protected

12.03.2013 – PACE’s Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media, meeting in Paris today, adopted a draft recommendation on “Young people’s access to fundamental rights” on the basis of a report by Michael Connarty (United Kingdom, SOC).

The committee considers that European youth policies “do not sufficiently safeguard these rights”. It underlines the need to take measures to enhance the evaluation of the current situation and to identify the difficulties and obstacles that need to be addressed with a view to preparing “a handbook of instruments, programmes and policies on youth rights”.

The committee also underlined the importance of transversal policies and co-operation in this field and proposed that the Committee of Ministers be asked to appoint a European ombudsperson “to ensure that the rights of young people are respected and protected”.
