CIA secret flights and detentions: Truth is on the march

Statement by Dick Marty

Dick Marty (Switzerland, ALDE), the author of two reports by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on CIA secret flights and detentions in Europe in 2006 and 2007, welcomed the revelation of the truth on the CIA’s use of the British Diego Garcia airbase.

“Yet more denials prove to be untrue. Further admissions will undoubtedly confirm the facts established by the Council of Europe. Truth is on the march. I call on the parliaments and the courts of the countries named in the resolutions of the Parliamentary Assembly to step up their efforts to shed full light on this matter. I deplore the lack of resolve of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe to associate themselves with this search for the truth, a truth that must be established to ensure that there will never again be abuses of this kind in Europe!,” said Dick Marty.

In his report dated 11 June 2007, Dick Marty said he had received “information sufficiently serious to demand further investigation”, without being “in a position to reach definitive conclusions in this report”. He noted that “the UK Government has readily accepted ‘assurances’ from US authorities to the contrary, without ever independently or transparently inquiring into the allegations itself, or accounting to the public in a sufficiently thorough manner.” (paragraph 70 of the report “Secret detentions and illegal transfers of detainees involving Council of Europe member states: second report”)
