Indoor pollution and its links to illness to be considered at a conference in Strasbourg

Strasbourg, 28.11.2008 – The Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) is to hold a conference in Strasbourg (Palais de l’Europe, Room 1) on 5 December on "Environment and Health - Indoor Pollution and Multi System Illnesses".

The conference, which is open to the press, will allow scientific and medical experts to express their views on the effects of a polluted environment on health. The discussions will provide material for a report by Jean Huss (Luxembourg, SOC) on “Environment and health: better prevention of environment-related health hazards”.

Environment-related pathologies are no longer confined to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and certain forms of cancer: other chronic and emerging pathologies are also deemed to have links with the environment, including impairments of the nervous, immune and endocrine systems. Indoor pollution in housing and other buildings, both old and new, is likely to be just as harmful to health as outdoor pollution.
