Tunisia: measures to support a “free, open and democratic country”
The Council of Europe must do all it can to support democracy in Tunisia, not least with practical assistance on electoral matters, and by involving Tunisian representatives in its own activities.
Following the proposals by the rapporteur (Anne Brasseur, Luxembourg, ALDE), the Assembly said that the future Tunisian Parliament could consider applying for “Partner for Democracy” status with the Assembly.
The Committee of Ministers should also think about creating a special status for the countries of the southern and eastern Mediterranean.
Concerned about a “very fragile” political situation, the Assembly urged all Tunisian political and civil forces to act responsibly and “not endanger the transformation process under way”.
