Strasbourg, 04.02.2013 – “Match-fixing is a plague which is undermining the rule of law and slowly killing true sport”, said Anne Brasseur (Luxembourg, ALDE), the rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on "The need to combat match-fixing”, speaking today.
“The results of the investigation presented this morning by Europol reflect not only the seriousness of the problem, which I had already highlighted in April 2012 in my report on this question, but also how important it is for us to pool our efforts and how pressing a need there is to develop a common legal framework at European or even world level to combat this scourge. The Drafting Group working on a draft international convention to combat the manipulation of sports results set up by the Council of Europe is making good progress, and I call on all of Europe's political decision-makers to support it in its work. The time has come now to act. The sporting world cannot win this fight alone. It is now for Europe's political decision-makers to equip themselves with effective means of detecting, preventing and sanctioning all manipulation of sports results”.
