PACE President reacts to Lampedusa tragedy

“I am deeply shocked by this awful tragedy, which has taken place at the gates of Europe – and it is not the first,” said PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon, speaking today following the sinking of a boat on the shores of the Italian island of Lampedusa.

“Our Assembly has already tackled the issue of these terrible tragedies, including in the report by Tineke Strik on lives lost in the Mediterranean. As we discussed this morning, greater and greater numbers of Syrian refugees are also coming by sea to Europe’s coasts. Left with no alternative, they put their lives at risk by choosing the dangerous maritime route.”

“We must stop these dramas from happening again. I hope that this will be the last one, and I appeal urgently to member States for swift and specific action to make sure there are no more.”
