Guaranteeing access to food and food safety

Following a parliamentary debate on food security focusing on both quantitative and qualitative aspects, PACE called on member States to strengthen controls and labelling requirements and to support independent research on emerging risks.

Regarding access to food, the Assembly recommended that member States increase development aid devoted to agriculture and strengthen solidarity mechanisms to combat poverty. It also advocated reducing wastage at the level of food production and distribution, investing in sustainable agriculture and intensifying action to combat climate change and chemical pollution.

In a resolution adopted on the basis of the report by Fernand Boden (Luxembourg, EPP/CD), PACE also stressed the importance of implementing the fundamental right to sufficient and safe food.
