Satisfactory conduct of the presidential election in Tunisia: a new milestone in the democratic transition of the country

PACE welcomed “the satisfactory conduct of the presidential election in Tunisia” (23 November and 21 December 2014) and the high voter turnout, marking “a new milestone in the democratic transition of the country”, as a sequel to the parliamentary elections.

The report by Jean-Marie Bockel (France, EPP/CD), approved today by PACE, suggests that the electoral law should in future better regulate the financing of candidates and the election campaign, and should guard more effectively against misuse of administrative resources during election campaigns.

PACE will continue to support the Tunisians in their efforts to consolidate democracy, including through interparliamentary co-operation and dialogue.
