‘Joint efforts’ needed to solve problem of missing persons in Ukraine conflict

The problem of persons reported missing during the conflict in Ukraine can only be solved through the “joint efforts of all sides”, PACE said in conclusion to a plenary session debate.

It called on the Ukrainian and Russian authorities, as well as the separatist groups controlling the occupied territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, to share information on the fate and the whereabouts of missing persons and to take steps to help the families find and identify the remains of their loved ones. In particular, the parliamentarians proposed that a joint mechanism (working group) dealing with this issue be set up.

In a resolution adopted today, on the basis of the report by Jim Sheridan (United Kingdom, SOC), the Assembly also asked the Ukrainian authorities to co-ordinate the action of all governmental and non-governmental bodies dealing with this problem, including the work of volunteer associations and human rights organisations.
