President expresses concern at attack on Hürriyet columnist

PACE President Anne Brasseur has raised the issue of an attack on Hürriyet columnist Ahmet Hakan with the head of the Turkish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly, Reha Denemeç.

“It is not the first time that Hürriyet journalists and offices have been the target of attacks, and I reiterated my concern at this development. Attacks on the media are unacceptable. Journalists must be able to work safely, free from pressure and intimidation,” said Ms Brasseur.

“We expect the authorities to promptly conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into this incident. This is all the more important in the current pre-election context. Media freedom is an essential element of an environment for free and fair elections.”
