Seminar for staff of the Parliaments of Jordan and Lebanon and of the Palestinian Legislative Council

A capacity building seminar on Council of Europe Initiatives for Democracy, Rule of Law and Human Rights will be held in Strasbourg on 16 and 17 November for staff of the Parliaments of Jordan and Lebanon and of the Palestinian Legislative Council. The seminar is organised in the framework of the South Programme II, the Council of Europe-European Union joint programme to foster democracy in Europe’s southern neighbourhood.

Following a general introduction to the structure and function of the Council of Europe, presentations will be made on the European Court of Human Rights and the activities of the Parliamentary Assembly. Discussions will follow on the co-operation between the Council of Europe and non-member States and South Programme activities. Representatives from the Venice Commission and the Division on Economic Crime will then present the work of the Council of Europe in the domain of Human Rights and Rule of Law.

Underpinned by the EU Neighbourhood policy and the Council of Europe Policy towards neighbouring regions, the 3-year South Programme II, will continue to develop a long-term partnership with countries in the region as concerns issues of human rights, rule of law and democracy. The programme is implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by the European Union.
