President calls on new government in Chisinau to restore citizens’ confidence in institutions

Following yesterday’s appointment of a new government in the Republic of Moldova, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Anne Brasseur, has called on the authorities to take concrete steps to restore citizens’ confidence in institutions, to address widespread corruption, to ensure the integrity of public officials and judicial authorities, and to promote an inclusive political dialogue on the reform agenda.

“This is all the more important, as yesterday’s escalation of protests outside Parliament is very worrying. I urge protestors to keep calm and refrain from violence, and I urge law enforcement officers to show the utmost caution and respond in a measured way,” said Anne Brasseur.

“The Council of Europe and our Assembly is ready to provide the Republic of Moldova with its full support, including through the Assembly’s monitoring procedure and the various co-operation programmes,” she concluded.
