A new role for libraries and museums as ‘digital hubs’

The Parliamentary Assembly is urging Europe’s governments to increase support for libraries and museums as “digital hubs” for local communities, and to undertake fresh “strategic thinking” on how to renew their role.

Approving a report by Lady Eccles (United Kingdom, EC), PACE’s Standing Committee said libraries and museums were “a resource for human development and lifelong learning” that could be safe and dynamic meeting places for the local community.

They called for more diverse funding for these institutions, including private or business partnerships, as well as a greater use of digital technology.
