Riigikogu President urges upholding of Council values in difficult times for Europe

Eiki Nestor, President of the Estonian Riigikogu, has paid tribute to the role of the Council of Europe in establishing a rights culture in Europe, and urged his fellow Speakers to uphold Council values in difficult times for the continent.

Presenting a keynote address to the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament, on the topic “National parliaments and the Council of Europe: together promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law”, he expressed concern at the recent questioning of the European Convention on Human Rights in some member states.

He also urged participants to intensify work to promote and protect internet freedom – while preserving rights both online and offline.
