Joint Open Day at the European Parliament and the Council of Europe

“I am pleased that today you have the opportunity to find out more about our two institutions, which are a little like “sisters”, who share the same values” said Wojciech Sawicki, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) at the first Open Day organised jointly by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe on Sunday 14 May 2017.

“This visit will allow you get to know the two institutions better, help you to understand the difference between the two and above all to feel at home here in Europe”, he said.

Some 12 500 visitors visited the premises of both organisations for the first time, as Mr Sawicki pointed out. “Although they have quite distinct roles, they are closely linked in European history and symbolically linked by a glass walkway”.

“Here in Strasbourg, which is a symbol of the return of peace, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, and particularly the Parliamentary Assembly, have a very rich common history of shared activities, programmes, meetings and encounters” he concluded, pointing out that they had even shared the same debating chamber, given that up to 1999 the assembly chamber of the Parliamentary Assembly at the Palais de l’Europe had hosted the monthly plenary sessions of the European Parliament.
