'Europe is at a crossroads,' says Stella Kyriakides in Nicosia

“Europe is at a crossroad, and we must not lose sight of the common good in favour of short-term political gains or narrowly defined national interests,” said Stella Kyriakides (Cyprus, EPP/CD), Chair of the Cypriot delegation, representing PACE at the 127th Session of the Committee of Ministers in Nicosia.

She highlighted the need to avoid confrontational rhetoric at the European level and tackle the dangerous upsurge of populist, nationalist and xenophobic movements that contradict the very foundations of the European Project.

“Solidarity is essential, if we are to tackle the major challenges we are facing, whether these be in fighting terrorism, or finding solutions to the refugee crisis and migration phenomenon. The Assembly is ready to play its part by implementing its statutory role, upholding the organisations values and standards in the face of the momentous challenges we have to face,” Ms Kyriakides concluded.
