PACE fully endorses priority themes of the Council of Europe Secretary General for 2018-2019

The activities implemented by the Parliamentary Assembly in the biennium 2018-2019 will be directly related to the three priority areas of action of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, namely “tackling the rise in populism, dealing with the refugee and migrant crisis and combating terrorism”, today said the Standing Committee in Prague.

Under the resolution unanimously adopted, based on the report by George Loucaides (Cyprus, UEL) on the expenditure of the PACE for 2018-2019, the Assembly will also strengthen its action in the area of social rights to “combat the ever widening social and economic inequality in Europe”. In the area of inter-parliamentary cooperation, the Assembly will continue to implement various assistance and cooperation programmes suited to the needs of parliamentary institutions, financed through voluntary contributions from the member States and joint programmes with the EU, said the parliamentarians.

PACE will also continue its policy of seeking financial resources from governments and parliaments with a view to running several multilateral projects in 2018-2019 aimed at promoting European and international standards through parliamentary action, they added.

Finally, the text adopted stresses that the Assembly intends to raise awareness among parliamentarians and parliamentary officials on the question of national implementation of the judgments and case-law of the European Court of Human Rights.
