London terror attack: a heinous hate crime, says Political Committee head

“Last night in London, Europe witnessed yet another attack against innocent people - a group of Muslim worshippers who were hurt by a van as they left a London mosque,” said Mogens Jensen, Chairperson of the Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

He unequivocally condemned what he described as a "heinous hate crime”, adding "our thoughts are with those who have been injured and their families".

“The Parliamentary Assembly has consistently drawn attention to the importance of upholding freedom of conscience and of religion, as stated in Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights," he pointed out.

"As we face growing fanaticism, intolerance and rejection of the other person for being different, more than ever we must encourage fair and equitable treatment for all citizens, irrespective of their religious or ethnic origin, and to refrain from inciting hatred of any kind.”
