‘Failed’ execution in Ohio: a barbaric and unacceptable act of torture

Strasbourg, 16.11.2017 – Yves Cruchten (Luxembourg, SOC), General Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on the abolition of the death penalty, has expressed outrage at the ‘failed’ execution on Wednesday in Ohio of 69-year-old convicted murderer, Alva Campbell, who suffers with serious breathing difficulties.

“For almost two hours, prison staff tried unsuccessfully to find a vein to inject the lethal substances before deciding in the end to postpone the execution to a later date. I am deeply shocked. The death penalty is always cruel and inhumane, and the circumstances of this failed execution amount, moreover, to a barbaric and unacceptable act of torture,” the rapporteur said.

“This was the fifth failed execution in Ohio in recent years. I call on the state’s authorities to pardon Mr Campbell immediately and introduce a moratorium on executions,” Mr Cruchten concluded.
