PACE can almost be defined as 'the Parliamentary Assembly of Human Rights', says its President

Addressing the Standing Committee in Paris ahead of an exchange of views with the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Guido Raimondi, PACE President Michele Nicoletti warned that “as an Assembly one could almost define as the Parliamentary Assembly of Human Rights, our position is clear: efficiency should not be ensured at the expense of the effectiveness of the protection system".

He also underlined the obligation of the Assembly, in close cooperation with the Council of Europe Platform to promote the protection of journalism and safety of journalists, to keep the attention focused on the recent assassinations of investigative journalists. “We cannot accept to live in a continent where journalists are harassed, physically attacked or killed, simply because of their work. Without a free media and without freedom of speech there can be no free society”, he concluded.
