Bulgaria: Frank Schwabe and Zsolt Nemeth appalled by the murder of the journalist Viktoria Marinova

Frank Schwabe (Germany, SOC) and Zsolt Nemeth (Hungary, EPP/CD), co-rapporteurs of the PACE for post-monitoring dialogue with Bulgaria, are appalled by the brutal murder and rape of Bulgarian journalist Viktoria Marinova. Ms Marinova was the host of a current affairs programme on TVN, a local TV channel in the Danubian town of Rousse, and had recently reported on corruption in public procurement and possible misuse of EU funding. Her body was found on Sunday. The police reported she had been raped, beaten and strangled.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by what happened to Ms Marinova. We urge the Bulgarian authorities to thoroughly investigate her murder and abuse immediately. The perpetrators must be found and brought to justice as soon as possible and ways of protecting her colleagues should be examined by the authorities. Further, any possible links between Ms Marinova’s work and her murder need to be scrutinized.”
