Empowering intersex people: a crucial means of guaranteeing their rights

“For far too long, ignorance, shame, secrecy, unwanted medical treatment and discrimination against intersex people have played havoc with their lives and led to appalling violations of their rights,” said Piet De Bruyn (Belgium, NR), General Rapporteur on the Rights of LGBTI people, on the occasion of Intersex Awareness Day 2018 (26 October).

“I wish to pay particular tribute to intersex activists, who work tirelessly to ensure that the rights of all intersex people are fully respected and that they are empowered to make their own choices about their bodies and to live free of discrimination,” he said.

“I call on all states to implement fully the Assembly’s groundbreaking 2017 resolution on the rights of intersex people, the international benchmark today for achieving these aims,” he concluded.
