The role of culture and heritage in supporting the local and regional economy

Culture and heritage have a useful role to play in regions and localities by supporting their economies, improving cooperation with their communities and inspiring better and more creative solutions to their daily problems, the Committee on Culture said.

By adopting a draft resolution based on the report by Alexander Dundee (United Kingdom, EC), the Commission invited Member States to maximize the useful contribution of culture in the State and to direct culture and heritage more effectively towards education, employment, the economy, research and innovation. As regards local and regional authorities, they should develop sustainable development strategies by placing culture and heritage as core elements.
