PACE to observe Ukraine’s presidential election

A 27-member delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), headed by Angela Smith (United Kingdom, SOC), will travel to Ukraine from 29 March to 1 April to observe the conduct of the 31 March presidential election.

They will work alongside observers from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the European Parliament, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).

The delegation, accompanied by a member of the Council of Europe’s expert legal body the Venice Commission, is due to meet the presidential candidates or their representatives, election officials and representatives of civil society and the media, before observing the ballot.

If no candidate obtains an absolute majority of votes in the first round of the election, a second round is due to take place on 21 April between the two candidates obtaining the most votes in the first round.

A joint press conference is scheduled on Monday 1 April at 3pm in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Intercontinental, Kyiv.
