Credentials of the Spanish delegation to PACE challenged on grounds of political balance

The credentials of the Spanish delegation to PACE were challenged on procedural grounds at the opening of the Assembly’s session today in Strasbourg.

Making the challenge, Sir Roger Gale (United Kingdom, EC) said the Spanish list did not fully reflect the political balance in the parliament, as required under the Assembly’s rules. He was supported by at least ten other members in the Chamber, from at least five other national delegations.

The matter was immediately referred to the Rules Committee, which will look into the question and present a report to the Assembly later in the week. Until then, the Spanish delegation may sit provisionally with the same rights as other members.
