Pieter Omtzigt welcomes decision to set up inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia

Pieter Omtzigt (Netherlands, EPP/CD), rapporteur on the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia and the rule of law in Malta, has welcomed the decision of the Maltese authorities to set up a public inquiry into the journalist’s murder. This comes just ahead of a 26 September deadline set by the Assembly in a June resolution.

“I will now examine closely the terms of reference of the inquiry - published by the authorities last night - as well as its scope, powers and membership, before commenting further. Any such exercise must be fully independent, and its members’ impartiality beyond question,” said Mr Omtzigt.

PACE’s Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights will also discuss Malta’s implementation of the Assembly’s resolution as a whole when it meets during the forthcoming autumn plenary session.
