Motion for an Order | Doc. 738 | 23 October 1957

Consideration of the social implications of the proposed Free Trade Area

Rapporteur : Mr Henri C. J . HEYMAN, Belgium

The Assembly,

Considering that the abolition of obstacles to trade, envisaged in the proposal for a Free Trade Area, is closely bound up with the removal of distortions arising from disparities in social legislation and with the abolition of obstacles to the free movement of individuals,

Instructs the Social Committee :

to consider the social implications involved in the proposal for a Free Trade Area; and
to put forward constructive solutions so that the establishment of such an area may, to the utmost possible extent, lead to a harmonisation of social charges, facilitate the liberation of services, improve stability of employment and contribute to a rise in the standard of living of working folk.
