Establishment of a European Social Charter

The Assembly,

Having taken note of Resolution (56) 25 adopted by the Committee of Ministers on 15th December 1956, instructing the Social Committee to direct its work towards the establishment of a European Social Charter;

Noting that approximately 30 % of the working population of Europe is occupied in agriculture;

"Considering, consequently, that a European Social Charter should take into account the legitimate interests of the rural population of member countries,

Expresses the hope that agriculture will be included amongst the basic economic sectors mentioned in the European Social Charter and that explicit reference will be made to the social problems arising out of its special structure.
