Missing Persons of Cyprus

This written declaration commits only the members who have signed it


The undersigned members of the Assembly,

1.       Greatly concerned because despite repeated international calls for the ascertainment of the fate of the Cypriot missing persons, their fate remains unknown and the suffering of their families still continues,

2.       Welcomes the resumption of the activities of the Committee on Missing Persons, since August 2004, but at the same time expresses its concern that since the Committee’s re-activation, no clarification of the whereabouts of any of the missing persons has been achieved, neither has the Committee been able to commence properly its fact-finding mission,

3.       Calls on the Council of Europe to ensure through its various mechanisms that the necessary pressure is exerted on Turkey, to fully comply immediately, with the decision of the E.C.H.R on the Cyprus v Turkey case (2001), whereby Turkey was inter alia called to carry out an effective investigation for the ascertainment of the fate of the missing persons,

4.       Calls on Turkey, to exhibit in a humanitarian spirit, the necessary will and to co-operate sincerely for the ascertainment of the fate of all the Cypriot missing persons, in accordance with the pertinent International Conventions and Declarations.
