Egypt's role in the Middle East today
The Assembly,
1. Recalling its Recommendation 1024 (1986) on the European response to international terrorism, and Resolution 877 (1987) on Egypt's role in the Middle East today ;
2. Recalling Resolution (84) 21 of the Committee of Ministers on Council of Europe action in the political field, under whose terms member governments agreed :
‘‘to consult together on international problems of common concern and, if possible, to provide member states with pointers for the development of their foreign policies ;
to discuss events which uphold or flagrantly violate the principles and ideals on which the Organisation is based, in particular human rights, with a view to taking, if possible, a common stand on such events'';
3. Further recalling that the European Conference of Ministers responsible for Combating Terrorism, held in Strasbourg on 4 and 5 November 1986, resolved to examine ways of associating non-European states with this fight,
4. Recommends that the Committee of Ministers, in view of Egypt's pivotal role described in the report of the Political Affairs Committee (Doc. 5712), as well as her readiness to co-operate with the Council of Europe, manifested by President Mubarak in his address to the Assembly on 28 January 1986, give expression to European solidarity with Egypt by examining urgently with the Egyptian authorities how mutual interests can be translated into practical co-operation in the fields of activity concerned.
