Reception and integration of refugees in Jordan: an example for Europe
Over the centuries, the quality of European civilisation has been much indebted to those who have arrived and settled here; equally, that of other continents has been enhanced by those who have moved there from Europe. This forms the background to current thinking and may influence member States as they review policies for handling the increased number of migrants and refugees which have come to Europe since 2015.
In formulating policies, member States have the benefit of examples set by other areas of first arrival outside Europe. Jordan has accommodated refugees from neighbouring countries for decades and has been a major host for refugees from Syria since 2011.
As a partner for democracy, the Jordanian Parliament participates in the work of the Parliamentary Assembly. The Assembly should make use of this inter-parliamentary co-operation in order to explore, evolve, share and deploy good practices in member States reflecting the high standards already achieved in Jordan for receiving and integrating refugees.
