During the communist regime in SFRY, he was professionally engaged for the freedom of conviction, conscience, thought and public expression, initiating the issue of the abolition of certain very problematic incriminations in the penal law of that time which did not allow the exercise of these freedoms:
on the XXth regular meeting of the Yugoslav Association of Criminal Law and Criminology (Struga, 24-25 October 1983) he gave an introductory paper entitled "Penal protection of the self-government social structure and security of the state" in which he requested the abolition of the famous "delict of thought" (Article 133 of the Criminal Law of the SFRY), which caused severe criticism by the communist establishment and his punishment by the party, after which he left the Communist Party of Yugoslavia;
in relation with his ideas from the previous part, he favoured a special treatment of political prisoners in the penitentiary institutions in SFRY;
calling upon the Resolution of the Human Rights Commission (Res. ECN 4/1987/173), he defended the freedom of conscience regarding the incrimination of refusal to take and use of arms (Article 202 of the Criminal Law of the SFRY) by the members of certain religious communities, and was in favour of its substitution with either a civil service instead of military one, or, for introducing a special tax upon persons refusing a civil service, which would be determined according to the state expenses calculated per soldier.

Since taking silk, I have acted for private clients in respect of a number of cases which are presently before the Commission or in which applications are to be made, including the Orkney and Ayrshire Child Abuse cases
Through my participation in the preparation of the devolution proposals for Scotland, I have been involved in devising means of ensuring that the legislation enacted by the Scottish Parliament is in conformity with the ECHR
I was involved in the first ECHR conference in Scotland, a symposium entitled "An Introduction to Human Rights Law", which was held in May 1997. I was one of the speakers, my topic being "Bringing a case under the Convention". That symposium is being followed by a series of seminars on European Human Rights Law between November 1997 and February 1998. I am taking the seminar on "Taking cases to the Court of Human Rights".
In January 1998 I will be speaking at a conference on constitutional reform to be held by Cambridge University as the inaugural event of the Cambridge Centre for Public Law. The conference will be covering ECHR incorporation and devolution, and I will be speaking on the links between these two issues
