The Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men, meeting in Strasbourg on 28 September 2000 with Mrs Busic (Croatia, EPP/CD), Vice-Chairperson, in the Chair:

as regards:

-              The hearing on domestic slavery (Paris, 18 September 2000) (rapporteur: Mr Connor, Ireland, EPP/CD): heard a statement by the rapporteur and considered the follow-up to be given;

-              The meeting of the Committee in Finland (13-14 November 2000): approved the draft programme;

-              The contribution of the Committee to Assembly debates: appointed Mrs Poptodorova (Bulgaria, SOC) as speaker of the Committee for the debate on the conflict in Chechnya;

-              the participation to meetings organised by other bodies, heard statements by:

o        Mrs Stanoiu (Romania, SOC) on the International conference “Equal opportunities for women and men” (Prague, 30 August -3 September 2000);

o        Mrs Vermot-Mangold (Switzerland, SOC) on the fact-finding mission on the humanitarian situation of returnees to Kosovo organised by the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Demography (Pristina, 11-13 September 2000);

-              Representatives to meetings organised by other committees : appointed:

o      Ms G�lek (Turkey, SOC) to attend the Information forum on national policies in the field of equality between women and men “Human Rights of girls and young women in Europe: Questions and challenges for the 21st century” organised by the Steering Committee for Equality between Women and Men (Bratislava, 19-21 October 2000)

[without any cost for the Council of Europe ];

o      Ms Herczog (Hungary, SOC) to attend the Workshop “Men and Women in politics: roles, rules and ratios” organised by the Foundation for the Women of Hungary (MONA) and the Budapest Office of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (Budapest, 3-4 November 2000);

o      Mrs Cryer (United Kingdom, SOC) to attend the Colloquy “Modern slavery and trafficking in human beings, which European approaches?” organised by the Committee against Modern Slavery with the support of the European Commission (Paris, 17 November 2000);

-              its next meetings: decided to meet as follows:

         . Helsinki, 13-14 November 2000;

         . Paris, Tuesday 9 January 2001 at 10 am (Council of Europe Office).
