The Sub-Committee on the election of judges to the European Court of Human Rights (of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights) meeting on 9-11 April 2001 in Paris with Mr Akçali (Turkey, EDG), oldest member present, and then, Mr McNamara (United Kingdom, SOC) in the Chair:
- elected Mr McNamara (United Kingdom, SOC), Chairman by acclamation;
- elected Mr Akçali (Turkey, EDG), Vice-Chairman by acclamation;
- held interviews with candidates to the European Court of Human Rights on behalf of the following countries: Albania, Andorra, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Romania, San-Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, "former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia", Turkey and Ukraine;
- adopted its recommendations to the Assembly concerning the candidates of 16 countries;
- decided to hold its next meeting on Thursday, 21 June 2001 at 2 pm in Paris, at the Council of Europe office.
