The Sub-Committee on Human Rights (of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights), meeting in Salzburg (Austria) on 30-31 May 2001 with first Mrs Wohlwend, then Mr Jurgens in the Chair, as regards:

-      Activities of the Austrian Institute for Human Rights: held an exchange of views with the President of the Institute, Professor Franz Matscher;

-      Execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (Rapporteur: Mr Jurgens, Netherlands, SOC): heard a statement by the Rapporteur and held an exchange of views on the procedure to be followed;

-      Role and functioning of the Ombudsman institutions in societies in transition: held a hearing with the participation of:

Mrs             Leonarda Kuodiene, Ombudsman of Lithuania

Mr            Oleg Miranov, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Russian Federation

Mr             Jernej Rovsek, Deputy Ombudsman of Slovenia

Mr          Jerzy Siuatkievicz, Deputy Ombudsman of Poland

Mrs        Marta Vidakovic Mukic, Deputy Ombudsman of Croatia

-      Abolition of the death penalty in Council of Europe observer States (Rapporteur: Mrs Wohlwend, Liechtenstein, EPP/CD): held a preliminary discussion on the draft report submitted by the Rapporteur;

-      First World Congress against the Death Penalty (Strasbourg 21-23 June 2001): prepared the Sub-Committee's contribution to the Congress;

-      Next meetings:

. Strasbourg, 21-22 June 2001 (on the occasion of the First World Congress against the Death Penalty)

       . Strasbourg, during the Assembly’s June 2001 part-session.
