The Committee on Migration, Refugees and Demography, meeting in Strasbourg on 22 January 2001 (7.30 pm) and 23 January 2001, first with Lord Kirkhill (United Kingdom, SOC), senior member present, then with Mr Iwinski (Poland, SOC) in the Chair:

–        elected Mr Iwinski (Poland, SOC) to the Chair by acclamation;

–        elected by acclamation:

            .            Mrs Vermot-Mangold (Switzerland, SOC) as first Vice-Chair;

.            Mrs Aguiar (Portugal, EPP/CD) as second Vice-Chair;

            .            Mr Einarsson (Sweden, UEL) as third Vice-Chair;

As regards :

–        Rights of national minorities (Rapporteur for opinion: Mr Tabajdi, Hungary, SOC): adopted a draft opinion and amendments to be tabled on behalf of the Committee to the report of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights;

–        Federal Republic of Yugoslavia – recent developments (Rapporteur for opinion: Mr Iwinski, Poland, SOC): adopted a draft opinion and one amendment to be tabled on behalf of the Committee to the report of the Political Affairs Committee;

–        Committee's priorities and work programme 2001: held an exchange of views;

–        decided to resume its meeting in Strasbourg on 25 January 2001 at 2.00 pm (room 10).
