The Sub-Committee on relations with non-member countries (of the Political Affairs Committee), meeting in New York on 19-20 October 2000, on the occasion of the 55th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), under the chairmanship of Mr Jan Bergqvist (Sweden, SOC):

-            attended the 55th Session of the General Assembly of the UN when the item on “Co-operation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe” was discussed, as well as the emergency special session on “Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory” (20 October 2000);

-            held meetings with:

Mr Martin Andjaba (Namibia), President of the UN Security Council (in October 2000),

Mr Harri Holkeri (Finland), President of the 55th General Assembly,

Ms Louise Frechette, Deputy Secretary General,

Sir Kieran Prendergast, Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs,

Mr Hans Corell, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs,

Mr Hedi Annabi, Assistant Secretary-General, Department of Peace-Keeping Operations,

Ms Yvonne Gittens-Joseph, Chairperson of the Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs).

-                  was informed by Mrs Severinsen, (Denmark, LDR), Rapporteur,  on the exchange of views that she and the President of the Assembly had with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr Kofi Annan, on 3 October 2000 in Strasbourg;

-                  had a brief exchange of views on the situation in Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and decided pursue the topic in the plenary Committee on October 26;

-                  was informed by Mr Atkinson, Rapporteur, on the relations with the Algerian parliament and that a visit of the Rapporteur could soon take place;

-                  decided to hold its next meetings as follows:

. Strasbourg, during the Assembly’s January part-session (22-26 Janurary 2001),

. Japan, 5-10 February 2001.
