Role of the United Nations in Iraq

Reply from the Committee of Ministers

The Committee of Ministers has taken note of Recommendation 1628 (2003) on the role of the United Nations in Iraq, adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly on 2 October 2003, which follows up Recommendation 1603 (2003) of the Parliamentary Assembly on Europe and the war in Iraq. As with the previous one, the Committee of Ministers brought the Recommendation to the attention of member governments.

In its reply to Recommendation 1603 (2003), the Committee of Ministers informed the Parliamentary Assembly that the question had been discussed during the informal meeting which preceded the 112th Session of the Committee of Ministers on the evening of 14 May 2003 in the presence of Mrs. Louise Fréchette, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations.

The Committee of Ministers took Recommendation 1628 (2003) into consideration during its preparatory discussions for the 113th Session. It nonetheless decided to focus the Ministers’ agenda primarily on co-operation between the Council of Europe and the European Union and third Summit of the Council of Europe.
