50th anniversary of the Europe prize - Stocktaking and outlook

Motion for a resolution

presented by Mr Lengagne and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

The 50th anniversary of the Europe Prize will be celebrated in 2005, and the Assembly may wish to mark the occasion with a commemorative ceremony. However, it would be appropriate to seize this opportunity to take stock of the fifty years for which the prize has existed and consider the prospects for the future.

To date, sixty towns have already been awarded the Europe Prize, 165 the plaque of honour, 1,009 the flag of honour and 550 a European diploma. The most recent reports submitted by applicant municipal authorities show that municipalities continue to appreciate these awards and willingly organise large-scale ceremonies to mark the event.

Each year the Sub-Committee on the Europe Prize of the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs receives an ever-growing number of applications from towns in central and Eastern Europe.

The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe has moreover expressed an interest in the Europe Prize on a number of occasions.

The Parliamentary Assembly should consider means of making the Europe Prize better known, particularly in central and Eastern Europe, and see to what extent the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities could be involved in its management.
