UK postal voting system
Motion for a resolution

1. On 9 May 2005 17 members of the Assembly signed and tabled the following motion for a resolution (Doc. 10543):
"The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, concerned by the recent court judgment in Birmingham, UK, condemning malpractices in the UK postal voting system, calls for an investigation by the Venice Commission into postal voting legislation and practices in the UK and their compatibility with the democratic standards of the electoral process in a member state of the Council of Europe."
2. On 6 June, in response to this motion, the Assembly’s Bureau decided to note its contents without taking any further action.
3. The Assembly regrets this decision by the Bureau and calls upon it to reconsider the matter with a view to refer the motion to the appropriate committee for investigation and report.
