Towards Europe without walls and barbed wire

Motion for a resolution

presented by Mr Margelov and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

The Cold War that divided the European continent with many walls and curtains ended almost two decades ago.

Europeans proved able to overcome old prejudice and united on their way to a new, free and humane Europe.

The symbol of this great way is the fall of the Berlin Wall, a made-of-stone evidence of Europe’s division in the period of the Cold War.

Europeans rejoice in freedom and democracy of last years but many of them have forgotten that the continent still has old and even new dividing barbed-wire fences and concrete walls.

Such symbols of peoples’ division are present in various parts of the continent.

We believe that this disgraceful evidence of repetition of the past confrontation and current conflicts must be eliminated as soon as possible.

We propose to study the situation in detail and draft a report.
