Possibilities of cooperation between the Council of Europe and Lebanon

Motion for a recommendation

presented by Mr Čekuolis and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe takes note of the results of recent parliamentary elections in Lebanon. Forces, claiming independence from foreign influence, promotion of democracy and rule of law, fight against corruption had gained majority of votes during elections.

Council of Europe has a powerful potential and experience in dealing with above mentioned issues. Such experience should be shared also beyond the limits of European continent, first and foremost to its closest neighbours.

Even if Lebanon does not belong geographically to Europe, attempts to create the multicultural society in Lebanon are worth European assistance.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe should decide to examine the situation in Lebanon carefully and should give any possible “know-how” support for Lebanese officials if the latter would request it.
