New Orleans

This written declaration commits only the members who have signed it

      The undersigned members of the Assembly,

      Dismayed at the loss of life and the damage to property caused by the hurricane Katrina to New Orleans, Louisiana and Mississipi, and expressing our sympathy to the victims of this catastrophe;

      Recalling the importance of the architectural heritage of New Orleans and of Louisiana which are a witness to the relations between the United States and the European diasporas, in particular of France and Spain;

      Regarding New Orleans as a symbol of jazz and the musical expression of the black peoples;

      Wish that all that is possible is done to salvage and preserve the cultural heritage and traditions of New Orleans and its region, and call on Unesco, the Council of Europe and other instances to give whatever assistance may be needed to the American authorities.
