Doc. 10887

Inadmissibility of anti-Semitism in the social and political life of the Council of Europe member states

Motion for a resolution
presented by Mr Margelov and others

This motion has not been discussed in the Assembly and commits only the members who have signed it

Anti-Semitism as one of the forms of xenophobia has nothing in common with ideas of democracy and human rights. It contradicts the high standards of the Council of Europe and the main norms of international law contained, in particular, in the United Nations documents, the European Convention on Human Rights, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe resolutions and OSCE decisions.

Unfortunately, today anti-Semitism is coming back to the social and political life of certain European states. We are very concerned, in particular, with what the Council of Europe Commissioner on Human Rights reveals in his reports on a number of member states. Europe should not stay indifferent facing such a serious problem confronted today by democratic states.

The Parliamentary Assembly calls for strong condemnations of such acts. In this connection we urge the Assembly to prepare a relevant report and organise special hearings with a view to elaborate measures to combat this evil.
