50th Anniversary of Poznanian June Uprising 1956

On 28 June 1956 the citizens of Poznań took to the streets to protest against the dictatorship and violation of human rights by communist authorities. One hundred thousand people took part in the march of freedom, in the face of aggressive reaction of the state forces, transformed into the first anti-communist uprising in post-war Poland and one of the earliest uprisings in post-war Europe.

At the same time, in Western Europe, the structures of the Council of Europe were being consolidated and the framework of the European system of protection of human rights was being formed. However, the response of the state to rightful postulation of the freedom and human rights defenders was bloody suppression of the uprising by the troops, tanks and stalinistic security special forces.

On the 50th anniversary of these events, we salute the ones who lost their lives, health and freedom on the streets of Poznań defending human rights and dignity.
